Opal" comes from the Latin "opalus" which in turn derives from the Greek "opallios" and means "to see a change". Another possible etymology from the Greek is "ophtalmios" (for "eye stone"), but the original source of the name is probably a Sanskrit word: "upala" (gemstone), suggesting that Roman opals came from India. Andean opal, like Ethiopian opal, has none of the reflections or iridescence found in noble opals and contains 10% water. It is therefore more "common", has no crystal system and is characterised as "amorphous".
