Description:
Iolite takes its name from the Greek "ios" meaning purple. Its name therefore refers to its violet hue. Its other name is Cordierite. Iolite is a magnesium aluminium silicate of Mg2Al4Si5O18. Iolite crystals are prismatic with a darker colour in the prism axis. This is why lapidaries are very careful to orient the coloured axis of the gem upwards. Its birefringence index is 1.53 to 1.55. The largest deposits of Iolite are in the gravels of Brazil, northwestern Canada, India, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. Crystals up to 6 cm in height can be found in these regions.
