Iolite takes its name from the Greek word «ios» meaning violet. Its name therefore refers to its violet colour. Its other name is Cordierite. Iolite is a magnesium aluminum silicate from Mg2Al4Si5O18. Iolite crystals are prismatic with a darker color in the axis of the prism. This is why the lapidary ones are very careful to orient the colored axis of the gem towards the top of the stone. Its birefringence index is 1.53 to 1.55.The largest deposits of Iolite are in gravel in Brazil, northwestern Canada, India, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. Crystals up to 6 cm high can be found in these regions
