Origin of name: fluere (Latin) meaning melting - Fluorite is a mineral species composed of calcium fluoride, of ideal formula CaF2 and organic compounds. The various trace ions are responsible for the many colours and colour zonations found in this mineral.
Fluorite deposits are known in more than 9,000 areas worldwide. World reserves are estimated at 230 Mt (million tonnes), mainly in South Africa (about 41 Mt), Mexico (32 Mt) and China (24 Mt).
The main producer is China (about 3 Mt/year in 2010), followed by Mexico (1.0 Mt/year), Mongolia (0.45 Mt/year), Russia (0.22 Mt/year), South Africa (0.13 Mt/year), Spain (0.12 Mt/year) and Namibia (0.11 Mt/year)
